1. How does WaterSmart help customers and where do I sign up?

The City of Durant is excited to introduce our water utility customers to WaterSmart, a free online portal where customers can see their water use data, get leak alerts and more!

When customers log-in to their WaterSmart Portal, they’ll have immediate access to:

Near real-time data – view daily water use. Be alerted to leaks.

Billing – see current bill and bill history. Pay online.

Sign up for alerts – Take control of water use and avoid surprises.

2. Why is my utility bill so high? I haven’t been watering my lawn recently.

One reason is that we bill a month behind. For cycle 1 (accounts beginning with 06-19), the service cycle is from the 15th to the 15th, and we bill on the last business day of the month. The bill you receive is for service ending on the 15th of the previous month, and is due on the 15th of the following month. For cycle 2 (accounts beginning with 20-99), the service cycle runs from the 1st to the 1st, with billing on the 20th and a due date on the 10th of the following month.

Another reason could be a dripping faucet, a minor leak or a toilet that runs constantly. Even the smallest of leaks or slow drips will add up to hundreds or possibly thousands of gallons in a month’s time. Check out our water saving tips!

3. What if I find a leak and get it fixed? Can I get help with paying those unusually high bills on my account because of the leak?

Yes, we can adjust the account to a certain extent for a portion of the increased volume of water going through your meter because of a leak. When you discover a leak, the sooner you can get it fixed, the more we can adjust off of your recent bills. Plus, it lessens the additional load on the city’s sewer system caused by water leaks.

In order to be credited for a leak adjustment, you must submit all original receipts for necessary parts or fixtures you purchased to fix it, as well as any invoice from a licensed plumber you hired to repair the leak. We can only go back six months from your current bill to reduce any charges, so it’s important to take steps to soon when a leak is discovered. We compare your average consumption prior to the leak to the recent (last 6 months) high consumption resulting from the leak, and adjust 50% of the charges for the excess consumption as a credit to your account.

4. What is the average bill for my address?

If you’re moving to another home, we may be able to give you the consumption history for previous occupants at the property. Often, the size of the family, not the size of the home, determines how much water is used. Call the Utility office at 580-931-6630 for details.

5. Why is my bill always the same amount?

We charge a minimum bill for any consumption up to 2,000 gallons per month. For residents, the minimum bill of $45.25 also includes sewer service and a single polycart for solid waste.

6. How do I avoid disconnection of my water service?

The best way to avoid penalties and late charges is to make sure your account is paid on time.

Penalties of 10% of the balance are added to accounts the day following the due date, and delinquent notices are mailed out, giving approximately 10 more days for payment prior to additional fees being assessed. If the account is not paid in full OR payment arrangements made by 5pm on the due date, a non-payment fee of $50.00 is added to the account, and a service order for disconnect will be issued.
